How to Iron On a Patch: A Step-by-Step Guide

Iron-on patches are one of the easiest ways to personalise your clothes, bags, and accessories - and with a Pin Badger embroidered patch, you'll have a little piece of British wildlife wherever you go. Here's how to apply one perfectly, first time.

What You'll Need

  • Your Pin Badger iron-on patch
  • A household iron (no steam)
  • A thin cloth or tea towel
  • The item of clothing or fabric you want to apply it to

Step 1: Preheat Your Iron

Set your iron to a medium-high heat (cotton setting). Make sure the steam function is turned off - moisture can prevent the adhesive from bonding properly.

Step 2: Position Your Patch

Place your garment on a hard, flat surface (an ironing board works well). Position the patch exactly where you want it, adhesive side down.

Step 3: Cover with a Cloth

Place a thin cloth or tea towel over the patch. This protects both the patch and your iron from direct contact.

Step 4: Apply Heat and Pressure

Press the iron firmly down onto the cloth, directly over the patch. Hold for 30–45 seconds without moving. Apply firm, even pressure - don't slide the iron around.

Step 5: Check the Edges

Carefully lift the cloth and check that all edges of the patch are fully bonded. If any edges are lifting, cover and press again for another 15–20 seconds.

Step 6: Leave to Cool

Allow the patch to cool completely before wearing or washing. For extra durability, you can also sew around the edges - but for most fabrics, the iron-on bond is plenty strong on its own.

Tips for Best Results

  • Works best on cotton, denim, and canvas
  • Avoid applying to nylon, leather, or very stretchy fabrics
  • Always wash inside out on a gentle cycle to extend the life of your patch
