Enamel Pins 101: What is Hard Enamel and Why Does it Matter?

If you've ever shopped for enamel pins, you've probably come across the terms "hard enamel" and "soft enamel". But what do they actually mean - and does it matter which one you choose? Here's everything you need to know.

What is Hard Enamel?

Hard enamel pins (also called cloisonné pins) are made by filling metal recesses with enamel colour, then baking and polishing the surface until it's completely flat and smooth. The result is a pin where the metal lines and the enamel colours sit flush - creating a premium, jewellery-like finish.

What is Soft Enamel?

Soft enamel pins follow a similar process, but the enamel isn't polished down to the level of the metal lines. This means the metal ridges sit slightly raised above the enamel, giving the pin a more textured feel. Soft enamel pins are often more affordable and can accommodate more intricate colour gradients.

Which is Better?

Neither is objectively better - it depends on what you're looking for. Hard enamel pins tend to feel more premium and durable, with a smooth, polished surface that holds up well over time. Soft enamel pins can achieve finer detail and are often more vibrant in colour.

At Pin Badger, all our enamel pins are hard enamel. We chose hard enamel because we wanted our pins to feel like proper collectibles - something you'd be proud to wear on a jacket or display in a collection for years to come.

What About the Metal Finish?

Enamel pins also come in different metal finishes - gold, silver, black nickel, and antique brass are the most common. The finish affects the overall look and feel of the pin. Our pins are finished in a black nickel chosen to give a clean finish to each design.

How Do I Care for My Enamel Pins?

  • Store pins away from direct sunlight to prevent fading
  • Avoid exposing them to water for extended periods
  • Polish gently with a soft cloth if needed
  • Use locking pin backs to keep them secure on fabric
